This Summer: Rise to the Challenge!

What does it mean to rise to the challenge?

At mainstages, we believe summer camp is more than just fun—it’s a place where kids grow, learn, and build character. That’s why we embed a global theme across our programs and performances, creating Drop the Mic moments that leave a lasting impact.

This summer, we invite your campers to our theme: RISE TO THE CHALLENGE—an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, embrace adversity, and develop the bravery to take on whatever comes next.

What does it mean to rise to the challenge this summer?

  • Push Each Other Forward – Healthy competition builds character and helps us strive for our best while uplifting others.
  • Diversifying Your Perspective – Learning different viewpoints and collaborating for a harmonious coexistence.
  • Dare to Fail Gloriously – There are more lessons in defeat than in victory, and setbacks make us stronger.
  • Perseverance & Grit – Pushing past obstacles and digging deep to keep going.
  • Empowerment & Strength – Summoning inner power and believing in yourself.
  • Resilience & Growth – Facing adversity head-on and coming out stronger.

And the research backs it up! According to the American Psychological Association, resilience—the ability to adapt in the face of challenges—is one of the most critical skills young people can develop. Studies show that children who learn to embrace challenges and persevere through obstacles are better equipped for success in school, relationships, and life.

How mainstages will help your campers rise to the challenge this summer

Every program we bring to camp this summer is designed to inspire bravery, creativity, and perseverance:

Game Show: Challenge Mountain (Grades 3+)

  • This summer, we’re bringing back points and emphasizing healthy competition while still focusing on teamwork.
  • A brand-new feature, Challenge Mountain, will visually track progress, showing how teams can compete while also working together to reach the summit!

Defying Gravity: The Puppets & Play Adventure

  • This interactive performance explores the gray areas between right and wrong, teaching kids that empathy and resilience are powerful tools for navigating life’s challenges.

NYC Camps: Reaching Skyward

  • Our New York-based camps will take on a special challenge—earning badges that visually represent the towering NYC skyline. Each badge marks an achievement in bravery, perseverance, and collaboration.

Performance Residency: Bold, Brave, and Boundless

  • Through fast-paced improv workshops, kids will think on their feet, face unexpected challenges, and build confidence while working in teams.

Challenge Accepted! Creative Problem-Solving Activity Periods

  • As part of our theater program partnerships, rotating activity periods will feature "Challenge Accepted"—giving campers the chance to act out, problem-solve, and creatively navigate everyday challenges.

Why It Matters

We’re living in a time where powerful, empathetic, and resilient leaders make a positive difference in so many people's lives. But being a voice of change comes with challenges and setbacks. Our young leaders must be given the tools to embrace challenges, develop social-emotional skills, and build a camp community that thrives.

Ready to take on the challenge?
